Steve already stated that it is not practical to watch videos on a tiny device. Apple is more likely working on an easy-to-use, unified, home media system as well as a video version of iTunes Music Store.

One step further, Apple could be unifying ALL home communications via high-speed broadband including a dedicated video phone device and broadcast TV services. One central media center, hidden away, and wirelessly providing all of a home's data/communication needs.

Apple's motto is "Think Different" not "Think about repainting all of the old crap other people have already thrown out."

I can't imagine how I could get my money's worth out of a portable video device. If it cost 50 bucks more than what I would have bought for music I might consider it, but otherwise I would have to make a real effort to watch a handheld video device. I think most folks are like me and use handheld media players as part of their multi-tasking routine. Video just doesn't multi-task well. Unless your goal is to drive you car into walls on a regular basis.

After all, none of us will know whether they will or not (which the market will decide, not Steve). Except for ThinkSecret maybe but I'm not sure how many lawsuits they can handle in such a short span!!

The speculation about a video iPod is really just going to be Apple's entry into video-on-demand over cable, which they'll call iFlicks or whatever. No frickin' way are they doing a video iPod. They already have something like that--it's called a laptop.

hmmm... Never say never. I have a PSP and was very surprised that watching Spiderman on it was pretty enjoyable. I captured a bunch of Nova shows from their site and transfered them to the PSP so my son could view them while in the car on his way to school (I'm driving). He sure likes it.

I agree with gRen. Success of a product depends on implementation and timing.

If Apple see an opportunity they will go for it.

Sony's machine is primarily for gaming. Video is secondary. Smart move - they can test the success of this without having it as the primary reason to buy the device.

Now what would Apple do. Video / Music only device - would that be an attractive enough product?

I want a video hub for the home first before a portable video player.

Something that can take cable input, record programs, burn saved programs to DVD etc. Being able to check my email or the web would be neat.

The key to a device like this is that it should support HD content, and be able somehow to plug into a HDTV (either directly or through a hub) -- only then will it surpass its competitors and follow Steve's edict to present a superior TV experience.

The video aspect would be good thing for those who would give presentations off of their iPod. I, for one, would love to be able to use Keynote on my iPod in all of it's glory.

It's a gaming device too, dipshit. People use it primarily for games. The PSP proves nothing other than.. convergence leads to compromise.

Let me know when you see hoardes of PSP owners watching 'Fight Club' on the Subway on their PSP's.

Besides.. it's not even clear that it's a success! Games cost like 40-50 bucks, while DS games cost 25-35 bucks.. and so far.. all PSP owners have gotten are half-baked PSone games.

Mark my words... with HD size going up on iPods.. you will use the iPod to store your movies and docking station will sell before a Video iPod sells.

I know.. crazy.. that means we're still going to be watching movies.. *egads.. sitting down on a couch in front of.. what's it called.. a TV!

Right now you can plug your iPod into your home stereo. Why not have that iPod not only store music - but movies? And plug into your TV as well as your stereo? iPods will just get bigger and bigger hard drives - and there could be many uses for that space. I mean - they already store pictures - and yes I said store - most people probably want to print or e-mail those pictures - not just keep them on the iPod forever. And a lot of people like portable games.

Gotta take what steve says with a grain of salt....

Just to let you know, I own a 60 gig iPod photo and have purchased 3 iPods since they were first introduced. And, I have been a Mac user since 1994.

With that said - FUCK OFF!. I bought a PSP SPECIFICALLY and PRIMARILY for the video/picture capability. I just watched part of Monty Python's Holy Grail on the Metro subway ride in this morning and will watch more of it on the way home.

Yeah I agree with some of the above, it's not about watching on a small screen, it's about plugging it into a TV instead of having to carry a laptop around with you. Obviously you don't want to watch video on a tiny screen while walking down the street. Although how many mobile phone users do you know who are quite happy walking down the street with there heads facing downwards gazing into their phones while typing a message. It takes concentration to walk, type and not look where you're going.

I've watched TV on one of those pocket TVs and depending on the reception it aint that bad. If you're out camping or whatever, small screen is better than no screen

I wish the iPod will eventually become the mini Mac mini. As in you have you're entire operating system on it. So all you need at home is a monitor/keyboard/DVDBurner/mouse (plus printer/scanner whatever extras you may have). You then simply daisy chain your iPod into the mix and presto. It would be great at airport kiosks and internet cafes. You just walk up, plug your iPod into the airports monitor/keyboard kiosk (after inserting a couple of dollars) and you've got your entire computer from home in front of you without the inconvenience of have to carry the whole kit with you.

I believe Apple will produce a Video iPod. Everybody wants to watch little 3D movies and music videos, but you need to think how it can be done. We already know.

Applel contradicts themselves about watching video on a small screen when you consider their involvement with 3gp on mobile phones on Japan.

Watching video on a small screen is perfectly fine and usable, espeically if is personal short video clips I've recorded. I've done that on various Archos models for several years now. I've shown such video to a lot of people over the years and they all like it. (Also is a video recorder/mp3 recorder/player/photos/PVR etc). Plus it can output to a TV, stereo etc. At the very least, a small screen can serve as a viewfinder, quick review of photos and videos that I record onto the same device.

It's not really a video iPod for movies, as it's only going to be used for a new mini iSight Camera being built in. That's what I predict....
