Apple has redefined how to redefine an industry.

Using iPhones and iPod touches to control games running on the AppleTV?

Very interesting...

Cubert,

You hittin' the sauce again buddy?

May 13, 09 - 06:35 pm Comment from: GregoriusM

Apple has a 5 to 10 year plan.

Don't rule out AppleTV as the basis for something like this.

Would you have thought of the iPhone, iPod touch and AppleTV 3 years ago?

I highly doubt it.

May 13, 09 - 06:47 pm Comment from: spyinthesky

Nice to see that some people DO get it... and without the need for rocket based chip design too. Mind you they have that too now should they need it.

May 13, 09 - 07:19 pm Comment from: Zsus

What the hell is this "Exactly as the iPhone was four devices in one (an iPod, a Web browser, a mobile phone, and an email device)"?

May 13, 09 - 07:39 pm Comment from: jarrettdailynews

@ Cubert,

What the hell, either handle the meth like a man, or just stop snorting lines all together.

uhhhh, I think you smoke that stuff bro...maybe that's what's wrong with @Cubert....

May 13, 09 - 07:56 pm Comment from: @Zsus

Those are the four core functionalities of the iPhone, as defined by Apple. If you doubt it, take a look at the bottom of the iPhone home screen. From left to right, the icons are: phone, Safari/internet, Mail/email, iPod.
Jake

May 13, 09 - 08:06 pm Comment from: Synthmeister

And the App store adds a fifth functionality which is pretty much unlimited.

To clarify for everyone.

Sir Gill Bates,
Just started. Vodka and Sprite - my favorite. Although I like any form that Lady Alcohol takes.

jarrettdailynews,
I'd rather snort blow. The kick is better and it's also all about the "ritual de lo habitual". And, stop? Never. Although it is a fairly rare thing for me these days.

BIGGYB,
Nope. I'm smoking it right now - watchin' the Phillies dontcha know.

Buster,
Ho'd? That reminds me to make my flight plans for Vegas for my buddy's bachelor party. Oh yeah!!!

What happens in Cubert's pants stays in Vegas......and in the mind's of the 3 chicks involved.

May 13, 09 - 08:42 pm Comment from: OJ Simpson

What happens in...Vegas, stays in Vegas

Yea, that's what I thought.

heheehe take that Laura!

May 13, 09 - 09:09 pm Comment from: pricing

Using iPhones and iPod touches to control games running on the AppleTV?

Nice enough. But let's look at the numbers:

$249 for a Wii.

$199-$299 (plus service) for an iPhone.
$229-$399 for an iPod touch.
$229-$329 for an AppleTV.

Which gives us $249 for Nintendo's system, and $428-$728 for Apple's (not counting service charges). After factoring in Wii's well-established momentum, does Apple stand any chance here?

Apple, iPhone IS your home gaming platform. Focus on it!!

As for AppleTV, it's far too late. Quietly kill it, then wait until after the Wii runs course to consider another try.

@alarmist
Thanks for the tip; the Mac community takes care of its own, which is one reason we have so little malware. On the other hand, the number of folks actively using PowerPoint '04 or '08 on the Mac is probably, like, in the hundreds, maybe? What hacker would care about that? See, Keynote is to PowerPoint what Sierra Nevada is to Bud Light.

On topic: How realistic is this article, really? I mean, the idea of Apple taking gaming seriously is sort of like the idea of them taking the business sector seriously. With their current billions, they could jump into either arena, and probably do a good job, but come on, they haven't shown an inkling of caring about either one. If they do decide to go for gaming, the casual games currently available in the App Store, while fun in ten minute bursts, are laughably simplistic compared with what's available on a PS3 or XBox, let alone those available for big Windows gaming rigs. Can something played on an AppleTV hope to compare with the likes of Halo or whatever? I'm thinking not.

May 13, 09 - 11:36 pm Comment from: LiM

Can it do anything a mini can't?

May 13, 09 - 11:36 pm Comment from: TheConfuzed1

@ aka Christian--

Maybe not yet, but wait and see.

May 14, 09 - 01:48 am Comment from: bizlaw

Nice idea, but touch screen controllers are too expensive. They could be simpler than iPod touches, but even using an iPod nano with a small touch screen would be $150 each.

Of course, Apple could make up the difference by having games cost $5-$10 instead of $50.

May 14, 09 - 10:04 am Comment from: Andy

Now all Apple needs to do is name the console the 'Pippin Take II', eh?

May 14, 09 - 10:18 am Comment from: Demon

What a load of Crap!!!
There is no proof, evidence or even slightly creditable rumors to support this wanker's opinion. That least the wanker doesn't try to support his opinion with anything either. But, a wanker out of no where making a claim that YES, Apple is about to redefine the Game Console Industry and this it's just around the corner, is such a load of crap that it's beyond funny.
Just after the Apple TV came out, when asked about Apple getting into the console wars, Phil or Steve said something to the effect of, There is no money in that market for us (Apple), and Nintindo with the Wii will have the momentum to take the market and expand it and innovate that market it in ways that Sony and Microsoft will not be ready for.
Apple will not get into the Game console market because the market is not a profitable one, and because Nintindo currently holds all the Innovation cards. Nintindo and not Sony or Microsoft, is the one expanding the market for the Game Console.

iPhone or iPod touch as controllers makes no sense. You need to FEEL the buttons.
